ncat announces position opening
St. Lawrence University invites applications for Assistant Director of the Newell Center for Arts Technology (NCAT). This joint appointment in the NCAT and the Information Technology division is a full-time, twelve-month staff position; the Assistant Director will report to the NCAT Director and the Director of Client Services.
The Newell Center for Arts Technology, which opened in 2007, is a shared space where digital technologies are used to explore new areas within arts disciplines as well as to blur the boundaries between those disciplines. This unique facility, which occupies 2,500 square feet and boasts more than 50 workstations, replaces departmental labs with a collection of flexible, shared spaces. The NCAT is an independent unit within Academic Affairs, but works very closely with the departments of Fine Arts, Music, Performance & Communication Arts, the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, and the Film Studies program. The Assistant Director will work with the NCAT Director to support the arts departments and programs in effectively bringing NCAT resources to bear in teaching and learning. He or she will maintain close ties and constant communication between the NCAT and IT, participating in IT planning, training, and operations as directed by the Director of Client Services. Responsibilities include maintenance and troubleshooting; assisting and training both faculty and student employees; conducting research related to the ongoing development, implementation, and maintenance of the NCAT facility and program; and other related duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will be a well-organized, energetic team player who can work well under pressure, with excellent written and oral communication skills. A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related area is required. The candidate must have support-level familiarity with typical peripherals and media equipment, including digital still cameras and camcorders, MIDI controllers, scanners, and wide-format printers. System-level security experience with Mac OS X and familiarity with data networking and internet services (such as AFP, SMB, AD/OD, and TCP/IP) are also required. Although the bulk of the workload will involve Mac support, experience with troubleshooting on Windows XP/Vista will also be necessary. The candidate will have very strong computing skills, including a familiarity with software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Logic, Sibelius, and Final Cut Studio; experience with media standards such as MPEG, QuickTime, audio and image file formats, and MIDI is also required. Desirable qualifications include two years of experience in an instructional support or customer service environment; and five years of professional technical support experience, preferably in a higher education setting. Apple certifications are also highly desirable.
